Bonus Card of the Day – Economic Sanctions key to hard and soft power

THREAT OF SANCTIONS BOOSTS US LEADERSHIP AND DIPLOMATIC POWER

HADLEY 2009 – FORMER NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISOR

FEDERAL NEWS SERVICE, CSIS REMARKS, 1-7

The third false choice is between hard power and soft power, or military force and diplomacy. The President understands that we do not have to choose between these tools. Instead, we must integrate all elements of national power – including diplomatic, economic, and military – to advance our interests. When properly employed, these tools can be mutually reinforcing. Hard power makes soft power more effective. And by maintaining the credible threat of military force and economic sanctions, we add weight to our diplomacy.

American Leadership and Hegemony – Decline or Adaptation?

A debate is raging over the merits of Obama’s foreign policy. Neocons despair that the age of unipolarity is over and America is hopelessly at a loss to sway international events according to its interests. Others argue that instead we are more maturely adapting to changing global conditions and economic integration in a way that maximizes our own interests and global stability:

If you thought the neocons were vanquished, disappearing along with the Bush-Cheney administration, better think again. Their mindset still animates most of what the GOP offers in opposition to President Barack Obama’s magical apology tour. For while the president won a Nobel Peace Prize for his heartfelt mea maxima culpa, Charles Krauthammer & Co. see no reason to surrender America’s two-decades-and-counting “era of maximum dominance” to the Chinese simply because Beijing holds the pink slip on our national economy.

What do you think of this debate? Is US leadership poised for a renaissance, or have we already reached a point of no return?
