and much MORE!
As the democrats are knee-deep in a fight for a key Senate seat in Massachusetts, a Democratic Rep. in Arkansas has just announced his plans to retire from the House of Representatives. Vik Snyder announces his retirement as part of a wave of recent announcements by Democrat leaders in the House and Senate deciding to call it a career. With the Republicans seizing on public opposition to health care, Snyder’s bow-out gives the GOP a little more breathing room in the race:
Snyder’s Little Rock-area district was already rated a competitive “toss-up” race by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report. Without an incumbent to defend the seat, the GOP prospects for a pick up are brighter. John McCain won the district 54%-44% against Barack Obama in 2008.
The Arkansas Democrat is the 11th member of his party to announce he will not seek re-election this November. House Republicans are dealing with 14 retirements so far, but more Democrats in competitive seats are vacating the House.
However, as the Wall Street Journal piece notes, more Republicans than Democrats have retired, leaving pronouncements of an easy sweep for the Grand ‘Ole Party a bit premature. With Arizona’s John Shadegg also calling it quits, it seems as though the GOP’s bag has a slighter bigger hole in its bottom than the democrats.
Congress is back in action very soon and the agenda is already being set behind the scenes.
